40,000 free travel passes are up for grabs for those turning 18 this year as part of a celebration for the Schengen anniversary.
DiscoverEU is currently taking applications for those interested in nabbing the free travel opportunity, which will grant them up to 30 days of travel.
The initiative is just for those turning 18 years old in 2025, with the passes valid between March 1, 2026 and April 30, 2027.
MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú urged all youngsters to apply for the once-off opportunity.
The Ireland South representative said: ‘For many Irish students turning 18 this year, this is an opportunity to explore Europe, experience new languages, culture, and traditions. Parents, teachers, and youth organisations also have a vital role in ensuring this opportunity reaches every community — from city schools to rural towns — so that no young person misses out.’
Candidates can apply individually or in groups of up to five for the passes. So, if you’re 18 this year and planning a post-school trip across Europe, get applying!
DiscoverEU is an initiative by the European Commission, which has partnered with Interrail to provide 40,000 free passes for teenagers, allowing them to travel across Europe and experience all that it has to offer.
In addition to free travel, successful applicants will be offered discounts on a range of services, including cultural visits, accommodation, and other benefits across Europe.
The initiative is part of a celebration for 40 years of the Schengen Agreement — the foundation of today’s border-free travel.
Applications can be submitted here, with a deadline of November 13, 2025.
