Travellers could take the train directly between Germany and the United Kingdom under a groundbreaking plan that would create a convenient and more sustainable alternative to flying.
German Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder and his British counterpart Heidi Alexander signed a declaration in Hamburg and vowed to push the project ahead.
Questions relating to border and security checks must first be clarified with infrastructure operators and rail companies.
“We are committed to ensuring that the first trains can roll directly from Germany to the United Kingdom under the English Channel in the coming years,” said Schneider.
Alexander said the link could bring the two countries closer together and open up new opportunities for tourism, the economy and cultural exchange.
A task force is to clarify outstanding issues.
